Dr. Kahn obtained his medical degree at Duke University Medical School in 1975 and completed his surgical and urological internship and residency at the University of California at San Francisco in 1981. He spent 1980 as a Fellow in Urology at the Johannes Gutenberg University in developing new treatments for kidney stones. He was Assistant Professor of Urology at the University of California-San Francisco. He joined Dr. Sharlip in private practice in Pan Pacific urology in 1985.

Aside from general urological practice Dr. Kahn focuses his practice on urological minimally invasive procedures. Endoscopic (through a telescope) and extracorporeal lithotripsy (from outside the body) of kidney stones has been the main thrust of his practice since 1980. He is internationally known for his work in this field and has lectured, taught, and published in this area. As a member of the American Urological Association Nephrolithiasis Guidelines Panel, he was responsible for outlining standard algorithms in the treatment of kidney stones. As an extension of his stone minimally invasive procedure, he has been in the forefront development of laparoscopic urologic procedure to help patients have a speedy recovery from major urologic procedures with equivalent or superior outcomes.

He is active in the American Urologic Association, Lithotripsy Society and Urology Society of America.
